Designing for yourself

Posted in Design, by Paul Welsh - Thursday, 09 August 2007

So I have decide to go live with my own website! I have been working on it in my spare time getting the site ready... which it's not yet... but nearly there, even if it has been a nightmare.

As a Web Designer I spend everyday basically working on websites, which is second nature and original ideas come quite easily. But when it came to doing my own website my mind went blank! It's as if I had no idea how I wanted to portray myself, I had spent that long working on other peoples designs and ideas (the majority corporate) that i just couldn't decide what my personal style was.

As for content, I knew exactly what I wanted to deliver... a blog website that included a little info about me and some of my work but when it came to design... I was stumped.

Before the final look you see here on the site I had been through about twenty different designs; flash, web 2.0 shiney, sketchy/hand drawn, flat and corporate, photographic... the lot, none of which felt like 'me'. It was as if I was trying too hard to design a site that would please people or that was 'in fashion'. In the end I decided to just fuck it and do what I wanted.

A couple of weeks ago i got some time off from work that I thought would be a perfect time to bash out a design. So I sat down with some paper and a pen, sketched some ideas then hopped onto photoshop and got on with some visuals. After a bit of tweeking, and a lot different fonts, I had something I liked in front of me (though I probably want to change it again in a few months time).

So in the end, why was it so difficult to design for myself? And am I the only person that has had this problem? Answers in a comment :-)

No, Paul, you're not the only one who have a hard time when it comes to design for yourself. I have some kind of difficulties, too.

This is a very strange situation because I have no creativity lack when it comes to portray the business' of my clients. It is possible that we are focused on seeing and knowing others than us.

Definitely, I always come a solution in the case of my own needs, too, but it takes more time and a more comprehensive overview.

I came across this post whilst looking for some help... I googled 'designing for yourself'... I've been working on my portfolio and I only seem to get 1/2 way through a design before I've gone off it and start again, each time wasting 2 hours or more! So no, you are definately not alone :)

How exactly did you 'fuck it' and do what you wanted? Tell me your secret! I don't even know what I want!!
