'The Tournament' Movie

"Every ten years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 40 of the world's deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag. All fights are monitored 24hrs a day on redirected CCTV cameras and broadcast secretly to a ring of high stake billionaire gamblers. A gritty, multistranded action-thriller, The Tournament brings together international killers from every imaginable discipline in a blood-bathed contest to the death. We follow the competition favourites through stories of love, betrayal, revenge and redemption as they finally discover the true value of life..."

Sounds like a good premise for a film yeah?... well a mate of mine is making it!!!

The other day I was just browsing around on IMDB having a look at what new movies I can be looking forward to in the next few years. Out of nowhere, I came upon a title i had heard of before.... 'The Tournament'.

A bit back, when I was at University about two years ago, I worked at a local Blockbuster (hey, we all start somewhere). There was a lad I worked with called Jono (Jonathan Frank), absolute movie buff and funny as hell. He was a budding writer and working on a screenplay called 'The Tournament'.

He gave me an early treatment to read (dont worry I wont ruin anything) and it was amazing!!! I can remember thinking to myself at the time "Wow... this is actually Hollywood stuff!". It was that good he even got funding from the National Lottery to make a trailer (see below) to take to 'Cannes Film Festival' with the aim to get funding to make it into a feature.

It felt so wierd at the time. A mate of mine was actually doing all this movie making, getting actors like Danny John-Jules (Blade 2, Red Dwarf) to film for nothing more than there expenses... it was crazy!!! Not only that, but when he went to Cannes, the trailer went down a storm...

So, after that little back story, lets get back to the present day.

After two years I had not really thought about it, but finding the link on IMDB rally got me excited. I have not really heard from Jono since leaving, just the odd joke email, so I didn't know anything about what was happening to him.

He is in Bulgaria now, filming with actors such as Robert Carlise (28 Weeks Later, Trainspotting), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Mission: Impossible 1 2 and 3), Ian Somerhalder (LOST, Smallville) And many more big names!!

I would just like to wish him the world of luck and to hopefully be successful as hell.

I have included below the original, low budget trailer that Jono took to Cannes. Just think, if this is the trailer... what will the actual film be like??

What a challenging project to work on, supplying all props, set dressing and building and costumes on a zero budget.

We would just like to say thanks to all the crew, they were all very proffesional and made a great team.

That's the magic ingredient to making a good trailer in such a very small production time.
