Lanternhouse International - The site's not on, but everybody's home

by Paul Welsh - Saturday, 27 October 2007

We (Musgrave) have just completed the temporary holding page for the Lanternhouse International in Ulverston. Lanternhouse is a purpose-built creative environment, with spaces for planning, making, learning, performance and exhibitions. We are taking on the complete rebuild of the site in the coming months, but the client was keen to have something there while we get to work.

The idea was to not have your standard holding page, but instead have something updateable, keep the audience returing. So we decide it would be good to create a CMS managed paged that the client can use to update with their current projects and news.

I like it, so hopefully you will to... check it out: www.lanternhouse.org

Well I've returned regularly to the Lanternhouse site since December and nothing has been updated. Everyone's home but what are they doing? I won't be returning for long.

Hi Dan,

When we first had a meeting with the Lanternhouse the plan was to have the site built for December. Since then we have had a second meeting in which we have taken a completely different route design wise.

This obviously has had a massive effect on the go live date... but do keep checking back!

In response to Dan Fox's comments - sometimes goalposts change, especially for organisations like Lanternhouse operating in a fast moving digital scene where projects change shape literally week on week. You only need to look at the news on their site to see that in the week we first met the Lanternhouse team Stephen Powell was Creative Director of Lanternhouse International, the following week he was appointed Creative Director for the closing of the Olympic games and was whisked away for weeks by his new responsibilities. I'm sure anyone would agree thats a pretty dynamic shift thats bound to have an impact on operational aspects of the Lanternhouse's work and certainly had a significant impact on how we all (Musgrave and Lanternhouse) viewed the website development project.

So as Mr Welsh says we had a second meeting (and a third, and a fourth) and took a new design route - one that suits the new way of doing things at Lanternhouse.

We like to stay positive as things do change sometimes. It would be a shame if Dan didn't come back. We'll email him when we think he'll be impressed because as my old gran used to say "It's nice to be nice".
